Finding Inspiring Garden Bridges You Can Recreate At Home

If you’ve gone as far as installing a water feature such as a pond or a streamlet in your back yard, the next step in creating your ultimate oasis could be to build a small bridge.

Garden bridges have existed around the world for many centuries, although most are now used for aesthetic purposes rather than purely for function.

The internet is a great source of inspiration when it comes to searching for different styles of garden bridges, and to give you an idea of what might work best in your garden. Entering ‘garden bridge’ into your favorite search engine will reveal plenty of garden bridge resources, and retailers if you simply want to buy a ready-made bridge, or a pre-assembled kit. Local landscaping and garden scaping companies are also excellent sources of information.

Nearly all garden bridges have a gentle arch, with waist-high handrails for safety and looks. Many incorporate an Asian-influenced design (such as geometric patterns in the rails, or by using bamboo as the bridge material), or the more traditional North American colonial style, complete with decorative rounded post caps and molding.

For the more adventurous garden builder, a miniature reproduction of one of the world’s more famous bridges could add life to your garden. Imagine the Golden Gate Bridge in your back yard! Your version hopefully won’t be 750 feet tall, but it will add structure and height for visual interest. The suspension lines could also be used as a flower trellis for climbing plants, further beautifying the space.

If you’d rather keep your bridge low to the ground, a simple pathway bridge with no handrails might be the best option. Botanical gardens often employ this style of bridge when they want to keep the focus on the surrounding plantings rather than the bridge structure. Alternatively, you may opt for a more natural bridge of flat stepping stones, placed close together, and secured in place to avoid accidents.
