Japanese Pond Bridges
If you have a Japanese pond, then a wooden garden bridge will look fantastic over the pond creating a unique look in your yard just like in Japan!
A Japanese pond is not complete without the full ambiance of a Japanese garden bridge. Just imagine walking through the gardens in Japan, with their gently curved bridges and round-topped posts, surrounded by cherry blossoms with Koi swimming in the pond below.
No need to imagine any further, you can have this exact setting in your own yard. Japanese pond garden bridges can be purchased as a kit or you can build you own. The choices are endless in creating your own Japanese style garden.
If you want to personalize your Japanese garden more with a garden bridge, then you can look at building your own bridge which can be customized to your individual taste and needs.
A place for meditation and contemplation, your Japanese garden, complete with a Japanese style garden bridge, will bring a quiet peacefulness to your garden unmatched by any other style. You can grant yourself these moments of peace and serenity indoors and out, but in North America, many areas are limited to the types of foliage that can be used to recreate a tranquil Japanese garden.
Japanese gardens are reflective of the perfect balance that can be seen in nature—there is no stress on color or symmetry, they are not overly lavish, but rather calm, serene and balanced. A Japanese garden bridge will add that something extra special to your garden, the sound of water bubbling softly below as you stroll languorously across your Japanese bridge—get lost in your own tranquil world and escape from the hustle and bustle of every day life.
Your Japanese garden bridge can be built in the traditional style of Japanese gardens or by improvising and choosing your own delicate balance and style in your new, tranquil garden.
Relax on your bridge and stare down at your Japanese pond—the Koi swimming lazily by with their beautiful colors and quiet nature, the sounds of peace and quietness enveloping you and washing away your worries down stream.
The Simple Plank Bridge Made Beautiful
With a simple trip to your local hardware or lumber store you can create your very own plank bridge for your garden.
Looking for a simple yet elegant bridge over a recess in the ground such as a stream or pond? One trip to your local hardware store, about $60 and a couple hours over two days is all you need.
Preparation
Measure the length of the space you’ll need to cover and add one foot on each end, for a total addition of two feet.
Dig a hole on each side of the pond or stream that your bridge will be on. Each hole should be 5 inches deeper than the top of the soil and extend 13” beyond the bank on either side.
Shopping List
2 – 2 x 12 cut to the length figured during preparation (this should be wood for the out of doors)
8 – Galvanized steel deck screws, each 3.5” long
Outdoor latex or oil based paints or stains in colors you like
Waterproof varnish
1, 2 or a few – 2” paint brushes
Artists paint brushes
Stencils in shapes you will enjoy
Get to Work
Start by cleaning your boards with a damp cloth. After they’ve dried (should only take a few minutes) paint them with your base color or stain. Lay the best looking board on top of the other, with the good side facing up. Screw together at all four corners, one inch in from each corner, and along the sides.
Using the artist brushes and additional paints or stains, embellish your plank bridge with designs, words, and designs from stamps, floral or leaf patterns. Think about a personal motto or a growth chart of family member’s feet. Once the paint and/or stain is dry, cover with waterproof varnish.
Once the varnish has dried completely, move your new bridge into the grooves you’ve dug on either side of the ground recess. Bury under a little dirt and enjoy!
